VisaAssess

I travel on a Pakistani passport. I have queued at visa application centres, had the questions asked, and watched people around me get turned away over paperwork that had nothing to do with the strength of their case. So I want to be precise about something that gets muddled constantly.

There is no Pakistani version of the Immigration Rules. Appendix V is the same document for every applicant on earth, and the genuine visitor requirement at V 4.2 contains no nationality clause. Anyone telling you the bar is formally higher for Pakistan is describing something that is not in the rule.

What is true is narrower and more useful: the same requirement takes more work to evidence from Pakistan than it does from somewhere with a fully banked economy and a land registry that answers in a week. That is a documentation problem, and documentation problems have solutions.

The practical shape of it

Pakistani nationals need a visa rather than an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which the two paths guide sets out in full. That means biometrics at an application centre, a full financial file, and the published fees rather than the £20 ETA route.

Fees, from GOV.UK and checked 13 August 2026: £135 for up to six months, £506 for two years, £903 for five and £1,128 for ten. The standard decision service is usually within 3 weeks, and the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.

That timing window deserves more attention than it gets. Three weeks after a three month run-up is comfortable. Three weeks after booking a wedding flight is the situation people write to me about.

Translation, which sinks more files than it should

Documents not in English or Welsh need a certified translation. For a typical Pakistani file that reaches further than people expect: bank statements from some institutions, property documents, the nikah nama, agricultural land records, anything issued by a provincial department.

A translation is part of the document rather than an accessory to it. An untranslated paper is, for assessment purposes, closer to an absent one. This is the cheapest problem on the entire list to fix and one of the most common.

The evidencing gap, which is the real subject

Here is where nationality genuinely changes the work, and it has nothing to do with anyone judging Pakistan.

A salaried employee of a listed company in a banked economy evidences income by printing a statement. A great many entirely legitimate Pakistani livelihoods do not look like that. Income arrives in cash and is deposited later. A business runs without formal payroll. Property is held in a father’s name across an extended family. Money for a trip is pooled by relatives, which is normal and generous and lands in an account as an unexplained credit two weeks before the application.

None of that is weakness in the underlying circumstances. All of it is harder to put on paper, and a file is assessed on what is on paper. That mismatch, rather than any rule, is what I would spend preparation time on. It has its own guide here, because it is the single most under-served problem for applicants from Pakistan and India.

Applying from the Gulf

An enormous share of Pakistani applicants apply from the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar rather than from Pakistan. I am one of them.

When you apply from a country you are not a national of, the assessment runs through where you lawfully live. The job is there, the home is there, the life you return to is there. Family in Pakistan supports the picture and does not replace it, and building the file the other way round answers a question nobody asked.

It also puts your residence permit at the centre rather than in the appendix, and makes its expiry date worth checking against your travel dates before anything else gets assembled. What actually carries weight goes into that in full.

Two things worth more than any document

Declare every previous refusal, from any country. A refusal is a setback that a later application can address. A concealed refusal is treated as a false statement, and that is a different order of problem with a much longer shadow. What happens after a refusal covers the recoverable version.

Let the numbers agree with each other. A file assembled over several weeks drifts: the income on the form, the figure in the employer letter and the pattern in the statements stop matching. Each item is accurate alone and together they invite a question. Our own check runs those figures against each other before anything else, because it is the most common fixable problem we see.

What this article is careful not to say

You will find sites quoting a refusal rate for Pakistan to the decimal place. We publish none, because the honest version requires citing the Home Office quarterly statistics properly rather than repeating a number somebody rounded off a forum post. When we publish per-nationality figures they will come from the published entry clearance data with the release named.

A national statistic also tells you very little about your own application. It describes a population that includes files nothing like yours, in both directions.

Common questions

Are the rules different for Pakistani applicants?

No. Appendix V applies identically to every nationality, and there is no separate standard, no additional requirement and no different threshold written anywhere for Pakistan. What differs is not the rule but how much work it takes to evidence the same things, which is a practical problem rather than a legal one.

How much does a UK visitor visa cost from Pakistan?

GOV.UK publishes £135 for a visit of up to six months, with long-term options at £506 for two years, £903 for five and £1,128 for ten. The fee is the same wherever you apply from. Figures checked 13 August 2026.

How long does a decision take?

The published standard service outside the UK is usually within 3 weeks, and the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. Three weeks measured from a three month lead time is a very different position from three weeks measured from a booked flight.

Do my documents need translating into English?

Documents not in English or Welsh need a certified translation, which for a Pakistani file typically means the bank statements, the property papers, the nikah nama and anything from a government department. The translation is part of the document rather than an optional extra, and leaving it out is one of the more common avoidable delays.

I live in Dubai on a Pakistani passport. Where do I apply?

From where you lawfully live rather than from your country of nationality, and that changes what the file has to establish. Your residence permit stops being background and becomes part of the case, because the assessment is about you leaving the UK and returning to the country you actually live in.

Does a refusal from another country have to be declared?

Yes, and previous refusals to any country are asked about. Concealing one is the move that turns a recoverable situation into a much longer problem, because a false statement is treated far more seriously than the refusal it was hiding.

US Visitor Visa from India: What Is Tested

The 214(b) presumption applies to everyone. What recurs in Indian files is a pending immigrant petition, and most guides advise hiding it.

Do I Need a UK Visa? Check by Passport

Whether you need a visit visa or a £20 ETA turns on one published list. Every nationality on it, what each path costs, and what the difference actually means.

Cash Income and Visa Applications

No route excludes cash, self-employed or family-supported income. The difficulty is evidential, and an ACCA reads that gap differently.
